First Discoveries
John King Davis
about 200 million years ago Australia, Africa, South America, India , and New Zealand joined together in Gondwana. Then about ten million years later Gondwana begins slowly breaking into the pieces that we see today. After making final detachment Antarctica settled in it's present polar position and cooled dramatically. Scientist know this because fossils showed proof. Our Antarctica today is divided into West Antarcticaand East Antarctica. Both of the parts are joined by a sheet of ice (very thick).
Antarctica was discovered in january 1820, 27 by Von Bellingshausen when he spotted it by his ship. He was a Russian navy captain and tho he only saw it it was still a great discovery. Tho in 1821, John Davis who not only discovered Antarctica with his eyes was the first human to step upon it making it an even greater discovery. James cook crossed the Arctic circle in january of 1773 for the first time, he dicovered near by islands but, he did not see Antarctica itself.

Ancients
Theory of flat Earth
The Pythagoras believed the earth was round in 530 BC. They were the ancient greeks and the Aristoles suggested that the symmetry of the earth should be balanced by the Southern side. Tho the Parmenides believed the earth had two temperate regions and between them they would find fire and even monsters this fear kept discovers away. An idea that the creator had made two parts of worlds in one (monsters and our world) was deemed heretical. The theory of a flat earth was noticed fully.
The Portuguese were the first to make the penetrations south. First the voyage of Bartholomeu Días de Novaes and João Infante, they first tipped off Africa then making way to India. This discovered that the Pythagoras were correct about the earth beginning spherical.

ANTARCTIC TREATY AGREED TO A 50 YEAR HALT FOR COMMERCIAL MINING. CURRENTLY USED (MINERAL RESOURCES) ARE SAND, GRAVEL AND CRUSHED ROCKS.
