Purpose of research stations
- Examines different animals.
- Examines food chains.
- Studies include lots of different species of penguins, seals, killer whales, black browed albatross, the leopard seal, blue whale, Antarctic shag, crab-eater seal, ross seal, Southern elephant seal, Antarctic fur seal, and the wandering albatross.
- studying the animals food chain help find out information about the environment.
- No borders.
- Cleanest air in the world.
- Darkest place on Earth.
- Research stations helped to highlight global problems, like climate change Most untouched and undisturbed region on the planet.
- Renewable energy services.
- Solar and wind energy.
- 40% of water is recycled.
- cutting edge technology and design.
- studies measurements of ice
- Have found new deep sea fish called “the Hop beard Plunder fish”
- Examine how the many months of darkness affect the animals
- Discovered sea snails called “pteropods”
- For many years Antarctica has been home to many research stations, most popular being Princess Elisabeth Antarctica. But you might be asking “why?”. Well, there are quite a lot of reasons really. One important reason to do this research is to find out more about earth itself! One way they have to do this is by studying ice to find out what the past climate was in Antarctica. The research stations also must research our atmosphere, if they hadn't then we wouldn’t know that Antarctica has the cleanest air in the world, on account of no cars, factories, etc. But they also need to find out what kinds of gases and particles are in the atmosphere.
Some of the other reasons the scientists go to Antarctica is to study the climate, weather, geology, and to study the wildlife. By studying these things, it helps to highlight global problems, like climate change. Lastly, studying the bottom of the food chain lets scientists understand environmental impacts on humans everywhere.
Princess Elisabeth Research Station
This is the Princess Elisabeth research station the most popular research station in antartica.
Location of Princess Elisabeth research station
The Princess Elisabeth station is located on a granite ridge of Utsteinen Nunataka.
